One of the most fundamental concepts in Ayurveda is the concept of the five elements which are space or ether, air, fire, water and earth. The five elements give rise to three doshas or Tridoshas called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Each individual has a different constitution or Prakriti depending on the predominance of one or more of these doshas. Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of creating and maintaining good health. Its focus is on preventing the imbalances that lead to disease. According to Ayurveda, healing starts from within and food is considered as medicine – we are what we digest. The addition of herbs and spices in our food helps the process of digestion and assists in the removal of toxins from our body.
